  • Blender. There was a successful campaign in 2002 to liberate the proprietary 3D animation programme Blender by releasing it as free (as in freedom) software, when NaN, the company developing it, went bankcrupt. €100,000 in pledges was raised to purchase the copyright to the software, including the previously-unreleased source code, and the Blender trade mark. The software was then licensed under the GNU GPL. Blender is still a successful free software project.
  • Ryzom. There was an unsuccessful campaign in 2006, which was very similar to the Blender campaign, to liberate the proprietary MMORPG (Massively-Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game) Ryzom, when Nevrax, the company developing it, started going out of business. The campaign was officially supported by the Free Software Foundation and had a final target of €200,000 in pledges, of which it managed to raise €177,972. However, the offer was beaten by the company Gameforge, which is continuing to develop the game as proprietary software. The campaign has now become the Virtual Citizenship Association, and may be used to attempt to liberate Ryzom at a later date, or a similar game, or to develop a new free software MMORPG from scratch.
