[edit] How about Collections
How about targeting the collections of small museums? Some small museums have small but significant collections of Paintings/Sculpture etc... These Works might be antiques and therefore not susceptible to copyright, yet the museum would hold a NO PHOTOS allowed policy, and would instead sell postcards or digital versions of photos of the works taken in-house.
One could try to Buy an unrestricted copy of the collection (and put it on wiki commons). Some Museums in less affluent countries might not have a digital archive of their collection. If this project can raise funds to digitize the collections of such museums on condition that the images are free, it might be attractive to those museums, as it would be a win-win situation.
- That's a good point. The classic works of art in museums and galleries are almost always in the public domain, but it's very hard to get good quality digital images of them which are free as in freedom, because they restrict access to them. We could get a good quality free image by liberating one which has already been made but is non-free, or by raising funds to pay the museum or gallery to let us make a good quality free copy. This is of particular interest for the Wikimedia Commons. They have a 'copyright wishlist' for high priority works to be liberated or to have free digital copies made of here. [edit] Games from the 1990s
I've decided to two games released in the 1990s from the list, as I think they're too recent to be realistic targets for the first work to liberate. Guyjohnston 19:56, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Legends Of Kesmi
I have for many years wanted to "free" Legends Of Kesmi, a game original launched on American Online which then moved to Gamestorm. The game was eventually bought by Electronic Arts. There have been a few projects to try and emulate the original server, but they fell to the wayside. In its day this was a very popular game for it was completly open ended and was one of the first graphical MMO's available.I would love to free the original server and client, so that we could create new areas and setup our own "kesmi" worlds. Here is the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legends_of_Kesmai Does anybody have a problem with me adding it to the main article?

- I don't have any objections to that at all. The point of the Suggested Works page is for anyone to add any suggestion they want for a work to liberate, even if they think no-one else will want to, so by all means go ahead. Also, I see you have a Wikia account. When you're signing a comment on a discussion page, it's a good idea to do so by just adding '~~~~' at the end, which automatically adds your username, with a link to your user page, and the date and time. There's more on this here. Guyjohnston 18:44, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Anonymous edits
I've noticed that there's been some edits made to this wiki anonymously. All positive contributions are welcome, however, it makes discussions much easier if you can tell who's written what. Therefore, when editing a page, please consider making a Wikia account and logging, to make discussions easier. It's also a good idea to sign your comments on discussion pages with '~~~~', which automatically adds your username and the time. Guyjohnston 20:11, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Pong
as a general note about Pong there is not a hope that Nolan Bushnell will ever give up the Pong license, he is still today pushing Pong clones. I met him at AMOA (American Amusement Operator Association) trade show a while back and he did not leave the impression that he is interested in talking about open source at all.
- OK fair enough. I don't personally have any interest in liberating it because I'm too young to have played it when it was popular. I only added it to the list because it's a very old and famous game so I thought some people might be interested in freeing it. Also, as it's so simple, I expect any free (as in freedom) clones of it which exist are probably relatively good alternatives. As you say there's no hope of liberating it, I suppose we might as well delete it from the list. I'll do that after a while if there isn't any opposition to that. [edit] Pharaoh's Tomb/Arctic Adventure/other things...
I would recommend freeing Pharaoh's Tomb and Arctic Adventure (from Apogee). They don't want to sell it anymore and they don't want anyone to get it for free either, and it is also really old and won't run directly on modern computers anyways. Also the PC version of Donkey Kong (also very old) and some old NES/Famicom games including Super Mario Bros, SMB2J, and if it is then the IPS patch for Super Mario Forever (aka Super Mario for Sadomasochists) can be used easily. About making the Mario characters public domain, I think they shouldn't have to do that, and also they can still continue selling it on Wii Virtual Console for US$5.00 each even when it is public domain. For SNES games we should wait much longer before attempting to free it. But even for NES games, you have to make sure of 2 things: (1) The amount of money is enough, (2) That you can do it without requiring the Mario characters also public domain. O, one more software, is QuickBasic Extended I would also recomend freeing. And maybe you can pay them enough money to get rid of the DMCA. --24.207.64.154 15:24, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

- I have another comment. Heartlight is already cc-by-sa (which is the best of the cc licenses in my opinion). Old translations of the Bible which are not copyright anymore are also public domain in my knowledge. --24.207.61.48 03:27, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
